You need high SAT scores and more leadership roles. The Polish school is interesting, though, and something that not every applicant will have. It might also be an advantage in getting you into schools that have a Slavic studies program (such as Penn, Brown, Columbia, Princeton and Harvard). I'm guessing you're in Chicago. Have you considered Northwestern or Notre Dame?

Badminton Bird Control

Badminton Tips!?

Hey people!..
I'm trying out for our school badminton team this year, and i was wondering if anyone could give me a few tips.
Like...
-How to do smashes
-backhand techniques
-speed birds (lol i call them that, they go so fast, but they don't have to go down like a smash)

if you know any other good moves..Tell ME!

I WILL pick a best answer, no matter what.
oops i accedentally put it in the tennis section!..OH well still answer please

Hello,

1. To do smashes, you need to target the shuttlecock in the right height of your body with a little spring from your feet and your racket extended over your head. The motion looks a lot like doing a serve in tennis.

Smashes are hinted by a long lob from the opponent and relatively close to the net. The closer to the net the lob goes in the easier you can do a smash. If the shuttlecock goes further down the baseline (and is still in good height -- a lob), the harder you do the smash because you are going against your own momentum and can mess up your footing.

2. Backhand techniques: you need to anticipate fast when your opponent is giving you a tricky shot by extending your racket to the opposite side of your grip. E.g., if you play right-hand, you would raise your racket across the left side of your body, so when the shot comes your body would automatically turns to react for a backhand. Vice versa with left-hand.

Bend your body often to give support for your footing so you won't miss any incoming shot.

Stay in the middle of the court so you can run toward the net if there is a short ball coming and toward the baseline for a long lob.

When hitting a backhand, tilt your racket head away from your body a little (almost like doing slice or hitting a spin ball in tennis), so you won't give a lob back to your opponent (which gives him/her an easy point by smashing your lob).

3. The 'speed birds' :) are all about timing and momentum. You need to read your opponent's incoming shots to be able to cut and give it a speedy smash.

I hope it helps. Good luck and have a great time!
