I know this not a tennis question, but there is no badminton section and I've had no answer from "sports-general". Can anyone explain to me the uses and advantages or otherwise of the different shuttlecocks available on the market. Much obliged, thank you
mick77 - what an answer, thank you. I have seen shuttles referred to as 76's and suchlike regards their speed. Any idea of the scale that this is set against (i.e. is 76 fast or slow etc). Don't mean to seem ungrateful... Thanks
Forget it. That refers to distance travelled in any one climate. 75 to 79 ranging from light/slow for hot high altitude to heavy/fast for cold low altitude. Thanks
Feathered vs. synthetic shuttlecocks
The feathers are brittle; shuttlecocks break easily and often need to be replaced several times during a game. For this reason, synthetic shuttlecocks have been developed that replace the feathers with a plastic skirt. Players often refer to synthetic shuttlecocks as plastics and feathered shuttlecocks as feathers.
The cost of good quality feathers is similar to that of good quality plastics, but plastics are far more durable, typically lasting many matches without any impairment to their flight. For this reason, many clubs prefer to play with plastics.
The playing characteristics of plastics and feathers are substantially different. Plastics fly more slowly on initial impact, but slow down less towards the end of their flight. Feather shuttles may come off the strings at speeds in excess of 320 km/h (200 mph) but slow down faster as they drop. For this reason, feather shuttle make the game seem faster but also allow more time to play strokes.
Most experienced and skillful players greatly prefer feathers, and serious tournaments or leagues are almost always played using feather shuttlecocks. Experienced players generally prefer the "feel" of feathered shuttlecocks, and assert that they are better able to control the flight of feathers than of plastics. Because feather shuttles fly more quickly off the racquet face they also tend to cause less shoulder impact and injury. In Asia, where feather shuttlecocks are more affordable than in Europe and North America, plastic shuttlecocks are hardly used at all. All senior international tournaments use only feather shuttlecocks of the highest quality.
badminton shuttlecock feather Probability- items from a bag?
A grade 9 class playing badminton in the gym didn't clean up very well after they were done. When the janitor swept up, there were 12 feathered shuttlecocks and 9 plastic shuttlecocks in the pile. They were put in a bag to show to the class the next day. if the 2 shuttlecocks were pulled out of the bag without replacement, determine the probability of the following:
a) 1 plastic and then one feathered shuttlecock
b) 1 plastic and one feathered shuttlecock
c) at least one plastic shuttlecock.
The question is a little confusing to me. Not sure where to begin
Thanks!
the possibility of just choosing two shuttlecocks out of the bag:
C(21,2)=210
a) you first have to choose one of 9,and then one of 12.it means half the probability of the second part of the question. (because when you choose one plastic and one feathered, there are 2 possibilities:1.u choose the plastic first,2.u choose the feathered one first.so picking the plastic one first has half the possibility of choosing without an order):
C(9,1)*C(12,1)/2
C(9,1)=9 C(12,1)=12 c(9,1)*c(12,1)/2=54
possibility:54/210=9/35
b) twice the possibility of the first one: 2* 9/35 =18/35
c) it means you have to add two possibilities: 1.you pick one plastic and one feathered shuttlecock. 2.you pick TWO plastic shuttlecocks.
1.it's the same as part b.=18/35
2.c(9,2)/54=36/210=6/35
