Badminton Horse trials Q...?
I know quite a few of the big names pulled out of the xcountry today but anyone know why Pippa Funnell, William F Pitt, Bettina Hoy, were not entered? Saw WFP's horses' names withdrawn - probably injuries - but others weren't even entered.
What's happened to Primmores Pride of late? Thanks for any info.
Pippa Funnell has taken a bit of time off. Primores Pride is resting, being saved for later. Pippa is bringing on younger horses. William Fox Pitt withdrew because the ground was so hard. I don't know about Betina Hoy. There was a huge amount of withdrawals due to state of the ground.
Such a terrible shame about the two horses who died though. I actually saw on TV the French horse get speared by the flag post and the blood pumping out of it's leg. A freak accident, nobody to blame, but how awful for everybody involved with this horse and for everybody who witnessed it I hope no children were traumatised too badly by it.
The other horse which died had a heart attack after finishing the XC course.

Badminton Life Update From Denmark Open 2009
Is it really that difficult to get into a UC school from out of state?
Well, I'm currently a sophomore in high school and I've been considering different colleges but I'm sure that I want to go to one of the UC's or somewhere in cali.
Here's some background info:
Currently I have a perfect GPA and I'm in all honors and AP classes possible for my year. By the time I graduate, I will have taken 10 AP classes. I played volleyball my freshman year and I played badminton. I dont play vball anymore but I still play badminton. I might be on varsity this year. I was elected secretary of the freshman class (student council). I'm currently in the Political Action Club and the math team at my school. (And I'm going to regionals for math team next Saturday, hopefully I'll qualify for state!!)
Is this good enough to get into USC, Berkeley or Davis?? Is there any other school I should consider?
any comments or advice will be helpful. thanks.
oh and I am also ranked number 10 out of 478 at my school
First of all, USC is not a UC school - it is a private university, so the same standards do not apply.
Now, for the UC schools, the good ones are relatively hard to get into, even for California students. Since there are a lot of other public options in California (CSUs, community colleges), only those with relatively high GPAs generally get into the UCs. In addition, as in most states, the reason the state legislature is willing to help fund the state universities is to educate the children of taxpayers. That means that there is preference given to California students over those from out of state.
Having said that, there are a couple of other factors to consider. You have a perfect GPA and a lot of good activities. With any luck, you will have a set of good SAT scores too. You aren't some schlub from another state with a barely acceptable GPA, so you actually have a reasonable chance of getting in. Also, and this is just speculation - I haven't seen this written anywhere - it seems to me that given the budget problems in California, they may be more willing to take out-of-state students who would pay out-of-state tuition rates, as long as you don't require a lot of financial aid.
As to USC, it isn't a public school, so it is likely to accept the best applicants it gets, and being from out of state might actually be helpful (depending on how many people from your state apply).
If you are willing to look at private schools, consider the Claremont Colleges as well. They have an excellent reputation.
